Fire Protection Services

Each Band Council has allocated capital funds to set up a Fire Department in Gitanyow, Gitanmaax and Glen Vowell. Funds have been allocated for equipment, operations and maintenance, and training. Each community consists of a team of volunteer firefighters, with a volunteer Fire Chief (exception of Gitanmaax with a paid fire chief) to provide fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, pre-hospital care, and hazards mitigation in the three Gitxsan communities.

Each community has a fire hall with a fire truck and equipment.

The Councils are pursuing a mutual aid agreement between each other and with the Hazelton municipality for fire protection services.   All Gitxsan bands are now part of the 9-1-1 services.
